We made it!

Two weeks in and I feel like I’m just now catching up…The new year has started, and along with it the sense of optimism that washes over the world. It always feels like such a relief,  everyone seems so excited, determined and motivated.

Out with the old?

You know what that means, everywhere we look someone is talking about resolutions. New goals, dreams, wants and desires. While there are a lot of ways we can think about making ourselves better or new (or shiny), I’d like to make the suggestion not to throw it all out. Remember, there are a lot of things that got you to where you are today. There are a lot of important things you are already doing, saying, being, that are pretty good, so don’t forget about those.

There’s nothing wrong with setting resolutions; new goals, word of the year, color of the year, creating vision boards, focusing on self care, and exploring who you are with infinite online quizzes; been there, done that ( no sugar, mediate everyday, Proud, Magenta, and my guardian angel’s initials are H.P.) But, in all of these explorations and reflections, it’s also important to ask ourselves…

What are we changing for?

I admire all of you who’ve hit the ground running; meal prepping, at the gym everyday and have all of your holiday decorations packed up and organized (truly!) Especially if this gives you a sense of accomplishment and more importantly, happiness. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

There’s so much focus on change and making ourselves better, does it ever make you feel bad?  When making resolutions, it’s easy to start focusing on everything “wrong” in your life, thinking you need to fix everything. There’s this promise of if you make all of these changes then you will experience true bliss. I’m not so sure about that. When it comes to resolutions, there’s a big difference between making yourself better and feeling bad about who you are.

I may not know you, but I do know this, If your resolution makes you feel bad about yourself, it will never “come true”.

Feel good, have fun!

Do you set the same generic resolutions every year? Why? How successful has that been for you? We are all different, yet it seems like we all have the same resolutions. Dig a little deeper this year, what is it you want to accomplish? What is important to you?

Do things that make you feel good about yourself. Not the things that someone somewhere said “if you do these things you will feel good about yourself”, but the things that truly make you feel good.

It seems to me the ultimate goal of a resolution (or life) is to feel good and have fun. There, I said it. You can learn new things, challenge yourself, feel good & have fun. You can! Resolutions don’t have to feel like torture, I promise.

When you are learning something new, you are learning. It can be exciting and frustrating ,so be gentle and understanding with yourself. Make it fun.

Simplify your resolution mindset

Here are 4 easy ways to set some resolutions you might actually stick to;

  1. Think about the things you love to do, do more of those things.
  2. Think about the things you are good at, do more of those things.
  3. Think about the people you like to hang out with, spend more time with them.
  4. Think about the type of places you like to go, travel to those places.

Wiggle room

Over the holidays, I was lucky enough to spend a few weeks off with my family. Along with having fun with them, I also made a list with projects I wanted to complete. Guess how many of those things got done? None. Usually, I would feel bad about this, thinking that I wasted my opportunity. This time, it felt different. I think it was because even though things didn’t get crossed off my list, I could vividly remember the things I did instead. I truly savored each moment.

On one of the coldest days of the year, I sat outside in the sunshine soaking it up as if I were on a beach. The snow fell and we caught it on our tongues. We told stories and listened to each other, learning something new. We laughed and played games. I read a lot of books, one of my favorite things to do. I truly enjoyed how I spent my time. It felt good to get lost in the moment. It felt good to appreciate the people I was with. It was time well spent.

It’s easy to get caught up in the lists and routines, the thousands of things you want to accomplish, and it’s also important to give yourself some wiggle room to let life happen.

Resolve to do the things you love, the things that make you happy. For the things you don’t love to do, find a way to make them easier or doable so you can truly channel your joy and share it.

Have fun, Do what you love, Feel Good, Enjoy what and who you spend time with.
